Boyd-Buchanan tops Sale Creek for Region 3-A title
SALE CREEK, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Katie Delay did the dirty work and Asia Kirkman handled the scoring Monday night at Sale Creek High School.
Delay's 69 digs helped pave the way for Kirkman's match-high 27 kills as Boyd-Buchanan claimed the Region 3-A championship with a 3-1 win over the host Lady Panthers. Set scores were 25-20, 17-25, 26-24 and 25-15.
The Lady Bucs (29-13) earned a home date in Thursday's sub-state sectional round, while Sale Creek will be forced to travel. Both clinched their spots in the sectionals with 3-0 sweeps in Monday night's region semifinals. Boyd-Buchanan topped Lookout Valley while Sale Creek eliminated CSAS.
Kirkman, who was named the bracket's most outstanding player, came through when it counted most, hammering home three straight kills to clinch the win in the opening set. She also four kills in a seven-point stretch as the Lady Bucs scored six of the final seven points in a come-from-behind victory in the third.
Delay and Kristen Reynolds (25 assists, 16 digs) joined Kirkman on the all-tournament team.
Jordan Duncan led the Lady Panthers with 11 kills in the championship match, while Mikayla Crowder added ten. Megan Storey (21 digs, 16 assists vs. Boyd) and Brooke Welch (29 digs) represented Sale Creek on the all-tournament team.
Ooltewah, Soddy-Daisy advance in Region 3-AAA tournament
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. (WRCB) -- The Region 3-AAA championship match will be a familiar showdown at Ooltewah High School on Tuesday night.
Ooltewah and Soddy-Daisy, who squared off last week in the District 5-AAA final, will battle for the region crown after both advancing through the semifinals Monday night. Both will now also advance to the upcoming sub-state sectional round.
Ooltewah, who was the district's top seed, easily dispatched of Stone Memorial 3-0 with wins of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-11. Soddy-Daisy survived Cookeville 3-2 in five sets to earn a rematch with the Owls. Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 16-25 and 15-8.
Alex Biro powered the Owls' attack with 10 kills, while Courtlyn Ison added 9 kills and 4.5 blocks. As usual, senior Sloan Sullivan did a little bit of everything with six kills, 15 digs and 6 aces.
Lauren Smith's 11 kills fueled Soddy-Daisy. Hannah Robertson led the defense with 23 digs.
