Police searching for East Ridge drive-by suspects

Posted: Updated:

The Regions Bank in East Ridge is closed Monday due to Columbus Day. The bank had another reason to halt business for the day.

A weekend drive-by shooting at the intersection of Moore Road and Ringgold Road added new plywood fixtures to the outside of the building.

Interim City Manager Frieda Wheeler says, "Unfortunately drive-by shootings are happening in many cities. We are certainly not happy about it happening in East Ridge."

East Ridge police say around 3am Sunday a manager at a 24-hour Walgreen's called for help when he heard gunshots and saw a Suburban speeding through the intersection.

Someone pulled up next to the car and starting firing rounds at the driver and passenger.

The stray bullets went through the windows at the bank.

Jennifer Jackson is tired of hearing bad news about her city.

"I feel like East Ridge is getting worse. I read many different crime situations happening in East Ridge."

After the shooting police found the victims at a nearby Waffle House restaurant with minor injuries, but plenty of bullet holes in the truck.

They haven't caught a suspect yet, but hope someone recognizes the car they were in.

Jackson says it's time for the community to pitch in and help police.

"There needs to be more of a community presence. Something like a neighborhood watch where people are coming together and looking out for one another."

Wheeler says any tips on social media or anonymous calls to police are useful.

She says the community has always been close, so looking out for your neighbor is crucial.

"For example if you see a truck backed to someone's house look into it. It isn't being nosey. Make sure there is a legitimate reason for them to be there."

Police are looking for a gray or sliver Chevy Impala or Chevy Malibu.
