Hendersonville police investigate suspicious envelope

HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Hendersonville police are investigating after a couple arrived to the department's headquarters Thursday with a suspicious envelope.

Sgt. Jim Vaughn said the envelope had arrived to the couple's home, and they thought it looked suspicious, so they brought it to police about 12:30 p.m.

An officer opened the envelope and saw white powder, so as a precautionary measure, some police personnel were moved out of the building.

There was no interruption in police service, Vaughn said, and police dispatch maintained normal operations. Thirty-two people who work in the building were kept in place until the area was determined to be safe about 8:30 p.m.

The couple is not under suspicion, Vaughn said.

Preliminary testing has determined the substance was not a hazardous or weaponized material.

Investigators say the substance may be a pesticide or even possibly rat poison, but they are waiting on final tests to be done in a few days.

Police caution anyone exposed to suspicious unknown materials to not move the material and to slowly distance yourself from the material.

Anyone with information relative to this investigation is asked to contact the Hendersonville Police Department at 615-822-1111 or the Hendersonville Crime Stoppers at 615-573-5400. Tips can also be texted to CRIMES (274637) using keyword TIPHPD.
