A ballooning overtime budget is a concern for any manager, but when the manager in question is a Midstate sheriff, taxpayers want answers.

Since he's taken office, Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold's overtime budget has nearly doubled. And the money is going, in part, to pay for security at school sporting events.

In the fiscal year ending June 2010, Arnold's predecessor oversaw an overtime budget of $576,000.

Now, the latest numbers on overtime add up to nearly $1.1 million.

Arnold told our news partners at the Daily News Journal that the change in covering school events means school resource officers and other deputies are on the clock instead of getting checks from schools.

Another big chunk is going to the narcotics team. Arnold said the department racks up overtime while investigating long-term illegal drug cases.

When it comes to paying overtime to anyone, the sheriff told Channel 4 News in a statement that his office is complying with the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act.
