EAST RIDGE, TN (WRCB) -

UPDATE: The volunteers who found the remains were a part of the Tennessee River Rescue, a one day, region wide event that focuses on cleaning the rivers, creeks and tributaries around the Tennessee Valley.

Before noon Saturday, a group of high school volunteers found a little more than they bargained for when they came across what seemed to be human bones in the South Chickamauga Creek.

"In a muddy old creek everything looks brown and dirty and their just pulling rags and trash out of this log jam and realize when they toss that shoe over there that it had a sock and a foot in it" said Jim Ledbetter, High School Volunteer Supervisor.

East Ridge Police later confirmed those remains are human bones.

While they're not releasing much information at this time, police did say the remains were in an advanced stage of decomposition.

"It was very decomposed, it was mostly just bones and rags, but it was obviously human,"said Ledbetter.

We're still waiting to find out exactly how long the remains were there and who they belong to.
