Officials investigate the single-SUV crash. (Oct. 3, 2013/FOX Carolina)
BELTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said they are investigating a fatal crash near Belton Thursday morning that killed a man who was running late to work, according to the coroner.
Troopers reported the wreck happened along Highway 252 near T.C. Bannister Road just before 6:20 a.m.
Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said a 25-year-old man running late to work hit a gully along T.C. Bannister Road, causing his SUV to go airborne and hit a tree.
The driver was wearing his seatbelt, but died in the crash, Shore said. He said when the SUV hit the tree, it immediately caught fire. He also said the SUV's engine and transmission were thrown nearly 100 feet from the crash site.
Shore said the SUV had some type of ammunition inside the vehicle, which was going off when firefighters arrived, making it difficult to extinguish the fire for safety reasons.
According to the driver's family, Shore said he woke up late for work at 6 a.m. and crashed about 15 minutes later. He said speed was definitely a factor in the crash and witnesses reported seeing the SUV speeding along SC 252, passing them, prior to the crash.
Shore identified the driver as Valeriy Saltykova, 25, from Honea Path.
