Colquette returns to Jasper in #FNF3 Game of the Week

Posted: Updated:

JASPER, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Ken Colquette knows the field at Marion County like the back of his hand.

The legendary local football coach spent 17 seasons leading the Warriors, winning 179 games and four state championships.

This Friday, though, Colquette will be seeing the game from a different angle in Jasper: the visitor's sideline.

The 65-year-old coach will return to his old stomping grounds with Sequatchie County to renew a non-district Sequatchie Valley rivalry in Channel 3's next Friday Night Football Game of the Week.

Colquette has the Indians off to a 3-1 start in his first season in Dunlap. Sequatchie County is the fifth head coaching stop in his career, but first since he left Grundy County in 2004. He had assistant stints at Soddy-Daisy, Ooltewah and Marion County in between.

Quarterback Dylan Harvey has engineered the Indians' triple-option attack with great success in wins over Community, Grundy County and Chattanooga Christian, while running backs Keith Billingsley and Blake Cates have been among the top backs helping to shoulder the load.

Penalties and turnovers have proven to be the biggest concerns for Sequatchie. The Indians were flagged 23 times combined in their first two wins, then found a way to beat CCS last week despite having two touchdowns called back. They've also turned the ball over at least once in all four games.

Marion County, meanwhile, is surging in Mac McCurry's second year.

The Warriors bounced back from a program-worst 1-9 season in 2011 with a surprising 9-3 mark in McCurry's debut, and they've been able to carry that momentum into 2013.

Junior fullback Blake Zemen is back as the workhorse for Marion's option attack, but sophomore quarterback Logan Walters has added a new dimension to the offense. His arm offers a dangerous deep threat in a play-action passing game that is finding more success each week.

Marion County blanked Sequatchie 36-0 a year ago as the Indians stumbled to a 2-8 record, but this year figures to be much closer with the teams combining to go 7-2 in the season's first month.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Marion County. Paul Shahen and Coach Mark Tipton will be live in Jasper with live coverage on Friday Night Football starting at 11:10 p.m. ET.
