Treasurer of Sen. Beavers' PAC says papers filed with state

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The treasurer for a political action committee affiliated with state Sen. Mae Beavers says the group has filed its registration papers even though its name does not appear in state records.

Furniture and appliance retailer A. J. McCall of Lebanon is listed on a fundraiser invitation as The Freedom PAC's treasurer. He said in a phone interview late Tuesday that he and Beavers of Mount Juliet had filed the paperwork.

But McCall said he wasn't certain if the official name matched the one listed on an invitation to a fundraiser outside Nashville next week.

The $50-per-ticket fundraiser on Oct. 3 says the event in Lebanon will honor John Harris, the president of the Tennessee Firearms Association, and health care investor Andy Miller, who spent more than $180,000 to support Lou Ann Zelenik's failed effort to oust U.S. Rep. Diane Black in the Republican primary last year.

John Allyn, the legal counsel to the Tennessee Registry of Election Finance, said state law requires political action committees to register before they receive or spend any money.
