McMinn County High student charged with cyber-bullying

ATHENS, TN (WRCB) - McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says a juvenile has been charged in a cyber-bullying case involving students at McMinn County High School.

School Resource Officer Guy McGill investigated complaints by students and parents about harassing and threatening comments directed at McMinn High students from a bogus Facebook account.

Sheriff Guy says the investigation revealed the incident was partly a hoax.

"Basically, one of the juvenile students who'd been the first to report the incident was the person who had set up the fake Facebook account, and who was making the posts," said Sheriff Guy. "We had noticed some inconsistent wording in some of the posts, and looked closer at who was receiving certain threats and who was not. Closer inspection, as well as details from victim interviews, resulted in our confirming this."

Sheriff Guy said he believes the posts had been sent from the accused student's phone.  He said he and Director of Schools Mickey Blevins had been looking into the case for several weeks, and commended the SRO and principal John Burroughs for their cooperation  Blevins confirmed that the student had been "disciplined according to policy."

The student was charged with harassment and filing a false police report, and the school disciplined the student "according to policy."
