FORT OGLETHORPE, GA (WRCB) -

Renters at a Fort Oglethorpe Storage Facility are cleaning up the ashes where a fire destroyed their units Thursday night.

Smoke and flames could be seen several blocks away off Cloud Springs Road in Fort Oglethorpe Thursday where officials say a storage business off Zachery Lane caught fire.

The flames spread to a neighboring building, forcing several small businesses to evacuate.

"No sleep been up pretty much all night," said Jerry Nelson, Jerry Nelson Electricity.

A restless night for Jerry Nelson. He lost his small electricity business in Thursday's fire.

"My truck was in there, all my tools, business materials, everything," said Nelson.

Nelson was back home when he got the call Thursday evening.

"A friend of mine called me and said the storage units were on fire and didn't know if mine was on fire or not cause it was blazing and going real high," said Nelson.

A big fire, that he says wiped out eight or nine storage units, including his.

"The water was going everywhere, knocking down everything. Those hoses can flat do a job," said Nelson.

Puddles of water washed away Friday as fire crews hosed down hot spots and cleared debris.

"I'll take it one day at a time. They'll do their job and I'll get back to where I need to be," said Nelson.

As nelson sits back counting his losses.

"That stuff mounts up there and it gets to be a pretty big number. The ladders, the van, truck, everything," said Nelson.

Up to $80,000 he thinks.

"We're going hit the ground running, we're going fix it," said Nelson.

Stuff he'll eventually replace.

"They took my tools and materials. But they didn't take my business. That's the way I look at it," said Nelson.

The cause of this fire is still under investigation.
