Rutherford Co. jail cutting contraband by watching mail

Posted: Updated:

The Rutherford County jail is trying to cut down on contraband behind bars by keeping a close eye on the mail.

The jail opens every envelope sent or received by inmates to make sure nothing illegal is inside.

With 800 inmates, that's a lot of mail to open. So, now, the jail is restricting what kind of mail inmates can get.

For the most part, they will only be allowed to get postcards except for the first week of the month when envelopes will be allowed.

Since July, the jail says it's returned more than 330 envelopes to their senders for violating contraband policies.
