MTSU armed robbery suspects in custody

Posted: Updated:

Police have two suspects in custody after an armed robbery early Thursday on the Middle Tennessee State University campus, and the school has announced normal activities can resume.

The arrests were the result of nearly nine hours of intense police work after two armed robbers held a woman at gunpoint in the center of the MTSU campus.

She was walking alone on the west side of Peck Hall around 2 a.m.

"The victim advised that the two gentleman approached her, demanded her belongings - at which time she complied and they fled the area," said MTSU police Sgt. Broede Stucky.

The crime prompted MTSU to issue a campus wide alert, urging students to stay away from the area as police made a perimeter around the university.

The two suspects were located by a police K-9 team near the MTSU athletic facilities, and they were then booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

"They located two people in the general vicinity that matched the description by the victim," Stucky said.

The suspects' identities have not been released, but police say the suspects are not MTSU students.

"It was just surprising, because I didn't think a lot of that stuff happened here," said MTSU freshman Savannah Shadrick.

Police recovered some of the victim's belongings and she wasn't hurt.

But even with both men in custody, some students say their sense of safety has been shattered.

"It's still scary because the action still happened and it could happen again," said freshman Shanice Scudder.
