Trial in murder, fetal homicide case moved from Allen Co. KY

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A judge has ordered the capital murder trial of a southern Kentucky man charged with killing a woman and her unborn child moved from Allen County to Simpson County.

Allen Circuit Judge Janet Crocker concluded that excessive pretrial publicity in the case of 35-year-old Charles Copass of Scottsville would make picking an impartial jury impossible.

Copass is charged with killing 22-year-old Chelsey Mahaney of Scottsville in June 2012. Mahaney was about four months pregnant at the time of her death.

The Daily News reported ( ) that Croker is set for trial Feb. 17 with the proceedings expected to last about two weeks.

Copass is charged in a separate, unrelated case with first-degree unlawful imprisonment, first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault and third-degree terroristic threatening.
