Man with long criminal history, including time on death row, accused of raping girlfriend
A man who once awaited execution on Tennessee's death row now faces
prosecution in Knox County on charges he raped his girlfriend at
gunpoint on Labor Day.
Arthur Copeland, 39, was being held Thursday in jail in lieu of $1
million bond. He is charged with two counts of aggravated rape, one
count of aggravated assault and one count of especially aggravated
kidnapping, records show.
Copeland was arrested Wednesday on Western Avenue, Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said.
Copeland is accused of raping his 30-year-old girlfriend at an
apartment in the 2200 block of Ridgebrook Lane. The woman reported the
offense at 6:17 a.m. Monday, according to records.
