Georgia’s Brandon Lord named National Athlete of the Week

ATHENS, Ga. (UGA) -- Georgia senior Brandon Lord has won the inaugural U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Men's Athlete of the Week honors following his win at the Georgia Cross Country Invitational over the weekend.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lord was named the Southeastern Conference Men's Runner of the Week following his victory. He had shared the SEC award twice before but never been the outright winner until Tuesday.

Cal Poly's Laura Hollander won the UC Santa Barbara Lagoon Open in a course record time to be named the National Women's Athlete of the Week.

During the 2013 outdoor track season, true freshmen Maicel Uibo from the Georgia men's team and Shaunae Miller from the women's squad swept USTFCCCA's national honors after their performances at the Spec Towns National Team Invitational/Bulldog Decathlon.

Lord, a 5-9 native of Chattanooga, Tenn., opened his final season by winning his second career cross country meet and grabbing the top finish for the fifth time in his four years at Georgia. He clocked a 25:49.17 to top the nearest competitor at the meet by six seconds in the only 8K run in the SEC over the weekend.

This is Lord's second consecutive victory at the Georgia Cross Country Invitational, placing first in a field of 63 individual participants.

The Bulldogs return to action at the Furman Cross Country Classic in Greenville, S.C., on Sept. 14.
