Program lets volunteers sponsor local veterans

Posted: Updated:

Over the past decade, more than 50,000 American service members have been injured while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and there's now a way you can help those heroes get adjusted to life back home.

Nashville's Chamberlain Society is starting a new program that allows people to "adopt" wounded veterans.

Here's how it works: Volunteers can sponsor veterans, who may have trouble taking care of themselves. The sponsors can help pay bills, take care of shopping or just keep the soldiers company.

"There are so many groups out there, helping our men and women, and we want to be a part of that. And if we can help one soldier a year, it is so worth it," said chapter co-founder Pam Ross.

The program is already getting a lot of positive feedback. In fact, the chapter already sold out its first fundraising event in October.
