Branden Davis sits with her neighbor Carolyn Adams. Davis helped save Adams' life when she was having a heart attack.
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A teen set out for an afternoon of fishing, but the 13-year-old boy never got his line in the water before calls for help reeled him in.
Most days at Branden Davis's fishing hole are pretty quiet. But about a week and a half ago, he suddenly heard the roll of tires on a gravel driveway.
"I didn't see or hear her, but I heard the golf cart," Davis said.
Davis looked up from the pond to see Carolyn Adams, his neighbor, beckoning him to the golf cart.
"I sat down, and I asked her what was going on," Davis said. "She said she was sick. Her back was hurting real bad like she'd been stabbed and she was holding her back with her arm."
Adams owns the property Davis was fishing on. The two had only met briefly when the teen knocked on her door to ask permission to fish at her pond.
But at that moment, Davis was Adams' only hope since she was home alone and having a heart attack.
"I just knew I wasn't going to make it," Adams said. "But then I saw Branden by the pond. I went as close as I could to him and I waved him over. I could not yell, I could not breathe and he came over. I said honey, I need help."
"I was pretty scared, because it was my first time like this ever happening," Davis said. "I guess it was just my nerves."
Those nerves somehow helped the teen figure out how to drive Adams's golf cart to her son's house nearby.
"I could have died," Adams said crying.
Shortly after Adams arrived at the emergency room, she had a quadruple bypass.
Adams said she's one of the lucky ones. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of woman.
"If you are having any chest pain, back pain, your arm does not go numb like they say in a man, go (to the hospital)," Adams said. "It's better to be safe than to be sorry."
It's a tale of survival Adams lived to share, thanks to her young neighbor.
"I'm proud that she's happy for me," Davis said.
"Yes, very proud of him," Adams added.
