LEBANON, TN (WSMV) -

Family and friends are remembering a prominent Lebanon attorney who died while participating in a cycling race over the weekend.

Jere McCulloch, 66, appeared to be the picture of fitness and good health, his friends say, and he lived a healthy lifestyle after a stroke 30 years ago.

"He had a black belt in karate, he watched what he ate and never smoked," said attorney Bob Rochelle, a partner at McCulloch's law practice.

McCulloch died of an apparent heart attack Saturday while cycling in the Heart of Tennessee 100.

McCulloch was pedaling 100 km, or about 62 miles, that day and had just passed the halfway mark when he collapsed.

"He was climbing a hill, and there are many hills in that area. He remarked to the cyclist beside him that he thought he'd get off and walk that one. And he hadn't taken very few steps and fell over," said attorney Mike Corley, who was also participating in the race.

McCulloch's death leaves a void for his daughter, Laura, two grandchildren and a staff who loved him dearly. Alice Oakley worked with him for 38 years - from a two-room law office to the largest law firm in Wilson County.

"Jere was a visionary. He always had a plan, always," Oakley said.

Friends say he was best known for his contributions to the community and his compassion.

"He studied people. He enjoyed being around people, and that was one of the things that made him such a good lawyer in the type of work that he did," Rochelle said.

A Mt. Juliet High School alumnus, McCulloch led negotiations for notable developments along State Route 840, including the Nashville Super Speedway.

"He wanted to know the self-satisfaction of improving your community, helping your community progress. But he really wasn't looking for ribbons and awards and certificates," Rochelle said.

Visitation runs Tuesday until 8 p.m. at the Mt. Juliet Church of Christ, and funeral services will be held there at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
