Paddle board yoga takes the popular workout to the water

Yoga is a popular way to work out and relieve stress, but a new trend ditches the traditional mat and replaces it with, of all things, a paddle board.

"It is an amazing core workout. Just by standing on the board, you are using your core, leg and arm muscles just to maintain balance," said Liz Veyhl, yoga instructor at Nashville Power Yoga.

Veyhl heard about the workout from a few friends, and at first she was skeptical.

"I kind of thought they were crazy. The more I saw photos and heard more about it, it just sounded like a great opportunity," she said.

So she teamed up with the Nashville Paddle Company to offer paddle board yoga on the water at Percy Priest Lake.

The class lasts over an hour and includes everything you'd expect from a traditional yoga class, just on a paddle board.

So, instead of sweating through the workout, you may find yourself drenched in another way. Falling into the water is part of the experience.

"If you can do it on land, you can try it on a paddle board. It might work out, it might not. Worst case, you'll end up in the water and laugh at yourself," Veyhl said.

Veyhl said children have tried it, as well as adults in their 70s.
