HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

An inmate attempting to escape from the Hamilton County Jail was stopped before he got very far.

Deputies say Kenneth Burnum posed as another inmate who was set to be released.

When officers went to the holding cell to get the inmate, Burnum claimed to be him. He then signed two bonds and the property sheet belonging to the other inmate and was moved to Central Control.

Officers doing final verification discovered the inmate set to be released was a black male and Burnum was white.

Burnum was charged with criminal impersonation and attempted escape.
