Officials have identified the Sumner County man who died after a head-on crash this week on Highway 52 east of the Portland city limits.

Charles Porter, 43, of Bethpage, was driving eastbound on Highway 52 when his Chevy S-10 pickup veered into the westbound lanes about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Thurman Kepley Road.

The pickup struck a Chevy Impala driven by Marjorie Gabbard of Westmoreland.

Porter was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Gabbard was transported to Sumner Regional Medical Center with a broken leg and back pain.

Sumner County Sheriff Sonny Weatherford said investigators found no evidence that speed or alcohol was involved in the crash, and they cannot say whether Porter may have fallen asleep at the wheel since the driver did not survive.
