Charlotte "I Have a Dream" 50th anniversary March on Washington - WSMV News 4

Charlotte-area residents in DC to commemorate 50 years since "I Have a Dream" speech

Posted: Updated:

People in the Charlotte area took a trip up north to be among the tens of thousands who attended the events to mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

WBTV's Steve Crump spoke to several people in our area who explained the significance of Saturday's events on the National Mall. Among them, Glen Hall of Indian Trail.

"Even though we've made great progress in this country the same things Doctor King was fighting for we're still fighting for those things today," Hall said.

Other folks pointed to the recently-passed voter ID law as being a race issue in North Carolina. The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP has been at the forefront in highlighting the negative aspects of the law passed by Governor Pat McCrory last month. The bill limits the early voting period in elections to ten days. It also eliminates same-day registration. Opponents say the bill is a Republican-led effort to suppress the minority and youth vote.

Governor Pat McCrory and members of the Republican-led legislature argue the law is needed to limit voter fraud.
