Certain factors can trigger frequent headaches, doctors say

Posted: Updated:

Experts say if you get frequent headaches, there is a good rule of thumb to remember for when it's necessary to go see a doctor.

If you're getting a headache that requires some kind of treatment more than once a week, you may want to look at a preventative option.

Dr. Jesus Eric Pina-Garza, chief of pediatric neurology at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, said there are certain triggers that folks with migraines need to be aware of.

"Most of the people that suffer from migraines experience factors we can't control like barometric pressure changes when there is a weather change. That it is expected to trigger migraines, or higher level of stress," Pina-Garza said.

Some triggers you may be able to control, including your diet and sleep patterns. And know that most people can be treated for their headaches and manage them.

Headaches can vary in severity, but if left untreated, they can really cause serious disruptions to life.

"So, an adult at the end of life suffering from migraines loses about two years of life with disability from suffering from migraines," Pina-Garza said.
