A baby deer had to be rescued after it fell into a manhole in Spartanburg on Thursday.

The yearling fell into the hole after workers servicing the water line left the cover off the manhole overnight, according to Mike Johnson of Spartanburg Animal Services.

The yearling was found when workers returned to the hole on Thursday to continue their work.

Johnson said the manhole was about 8 feet deep and the bottom was partially submerged in water.

Rescue workers used snares to hoist the yearling out of the hole.

Johnson said the animal had some injuries to its back legs.

The deer was brought to a wildlife rehab in Greer, Johnson said.

The incident happened near Woodburn Road and Connecticut Avenue in Spartanburg.
