Dover returning as Cavs head golf coach

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Former Darton State golf coach Dale Dover is returning to the position, WALB has learned.

Dover is retaking the position after a national search to replace Bill Jones III, who resigned in June.

Dover led the Cavaliers golf team to NJCAA prominence, including three national titles.

He served as director of golf while Jones coached the team.

Dover says his return will help keep the team from going through a transition phase.

"We didn't want to lose our current players and the recruits that we had coming in, and for the most part everybody stuck," Dover says. "We feel like that it will create that continuity in the program that we've always had."

The Cavaliers have also hired former player and Dawson native Gary Hilton as Dover's assistant coach.

Dover says the plan is to train Hilton to take over for him as head coach in the future.

"I don't plan to be here forever," Dover says. "He's got to come in and learn the ropes. And then hopefully it works out for him to be able to come in and take over."

Hilton played for Dover in 2000-2001.
