Mount Pleasant woman files federal lawsuit over arrest

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, Tenn. (AP) - A Middle Tennessee woman has filed a federal lawsuit over her arrest for displaying a vulgar message.

Patti M. Cole was charged with disorderly conduct after leaving the message on a broken toilet in front of a home she owns in Mount Pleasant.

The officer who the message was directed toward, Maury County Sgt. Rob Wagonshutz, filed a complaint with the city saying the message crossed the line of free expression, which led to the charge.

The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/13HtgKk) reports Cole filed a complaint in federal court in June alleging that county officials violated her freedom of speech and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure when she was charged.

Attorneys for the defendants say they deny all accusations and will "vigorously defend the lawsuit."

A conference in the case is set for Aug. 19.
