CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - The latest addition to the sprawling Silverdale Baptist Academy campus will complete the journey for the school's 270 high school students. Long forced to sit "on top of each other" at small tables in undersized classrooms, they will now enjoy a modern, state-of-the-art high school building. The two-story building occupies the back parking lot area behind the school's 3-story education building and the Silverdale Baptist Church sanctuary.
As part of the school's 21st Century Classroom Initiative, students are required to have iPads, which will link with Apple TVs in each classroom.
The new building will provide added Sunday school space for the church congregation on the first floor, with the second floor housing classrooms that will be used for a wide variety of different high school classes, from science labs to fine arts spaces.
Science teachers are excited about modern labs with far more storage space and work areas than they had before.
School leaders say more additions are possible in future years, with a Fine Arts Center near the top of their wish list. Principal Mickey Hammel said, "God has blessed us, and we're so grateful that our students will have new opportunities to learn, better than ever before."
Classes for the 2013-14 school year begin Wednesday August 14.
