PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Phoenix Suns forward Michael Beasley was arrested early Tuesday morning by Scottsdale police officers and booked into jail on suspicion of possession of marijuana before being released.

A police statement said the 24-year-old Beasley was driving a car that was stopped for a traffic violation near Scottsdale and East McCormick Parkway about 1:15 a.m.

Officers said that as they approached his car, they smelled marijuana. A subsequent search of the driver's side of the car uncovered an undisclosed amount of marijuana, according to the statement.

It was the third run-in with the law for the 6'10", five-year pro since he was acquired by the Suns.

He was investigated in May on allegations of sexual assault, and in January he was cited for multiple driving violations, including driving 71 mph in a 45-mph zone. He was driving on a suspended license and officers found a loaded gun inside his Mercedes.

Beasley also spent time in a substance abuse program before he played his first NBA game and was cited for marijuana possession in Minnesota during the 2011 NBA lockout.

The Suns signed Beasley to a three-year, $18 million contract a year ago. He averaged 10.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and shot 40.5 percent last season for Phoenix, which finished with the worst record in the NBA's Western Conference (25-57).
