SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -

Smyrna police have apprehended a man and his girlfriend after they were barricaded inside a home for several hours after an apparent domestic incident Tuesday.

The situation reportedly began about 10 a.m. at a home in the 500 block of Carter Lane after a brother and sister were having an argument near a car in the home's driveway, police said.

The female's boyfriend then came outside of the home with a gun and threatened the brother and his girlfriend.

The brother called police, and officers were unable to contact the two while they remained in the home.

Police said the two came out peacefully about 2 p.m. after tear gas was fired into the home. A small fire began inside when the tear gas canisters were deployed, and it was quickly extinguished.

Jonathan Scott Ashley, 27, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and also faces a warrant from Rutherford County for a probation violation, police said.

Ashley Michelle Joyce, 23, is charged with one count of domestic violence and one count of simple assault.
