Cold cases in Rutherford and Cannon counties will be examined with a fresh set of eyes under a new initiative to help solve crimes.
Rutherford County District Attorney General Bill Whitesell made that announcement Monday at Murfreesboro Civil Plaza.
Law enforcement agencies in the 16th Judicial District - including the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, Murfreesboro police, La Vergne police, Smyrna police, Cannon County Sheriff's Office and Woodbury police - will team up.
"We believe working as a team, that we can bring cases, work those cases and ultimately solve those cases," Whitesell said.
Currently, there are about 20 unsolved cases the team will try to solve.
Murfreesboro police are hoping the cold case team will be able to help solve the 2010 murder of Nathan Morgan Jr. He was shot to death on Eagle Street, and his unsolved murder is now considered a cold case.
Morgan's mother, Lisa Pringle, said she's pleased a new group of detectives will take a look at her son's case and others.
"I think what they are doing is great," Pringle said. "The different detectives getting together trying to solve these murders, is an excellent choice."
Even though it has been three years since her son's death, Pringle is still having a tough time dealing with the loss.
"Losing a loved one is not an easy pill to swallow, and a never-ending tear," Pringle said. "It's still like a dream, and you wake up and you wish it wasn't real, but it is."
Currently, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office has 11 open cold cases, and it has previously solved six other murders and one kidnapping since starting a cold case unit under past-Sheriff Truman Jones.
"We want to solve every one of them to bring closer to the families, but also bring justice to the victims," said Rutherford County Sheriff Robert Arnold.
The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office will be the only agency that can provide full-time cold case detectives, but all the other agencies will lend resources as needed.
"None of us have the staff to do everything we need, so we have to work together," said La Vergne police Chief Mike Walker.
Arnold will be providing office space for the so-called Cold Case Coalition at its new CID Building next to the sheriff's office on New Salem Highway.
