Cash and jewelry has disappeared from a gym in Columbia, and police now have a pretty good idea who is responsible.
Police say a man bought a one-day pass at Planet Fitness, then cased the place from, of all places, the treadmill.
"An unidentified black male goes into the facility several times. He's seen leaving the locker room, in this particular case, and is seen stuffing several items into his pocket," said Columbia Police Det. Billy Camargo.
He walked out with nearly $4,000, and a Rolex watch owned by Mark Bostleman, who says he's sure he locked his locker, while he was out exercising. He knows it was a lot of money to have in a gym, but what really bothers him is that the suspected thief wasn't even a member of Planet Fitness.
Many gyms in Middle Tennessee have a guest policy that says even if you want a single-day pass, you pay the fee and also show your driver's license, so they have your personal information.
That apparently didn't happen at Planet Fitness, and that's a big problem for Bostleman.
"This gentleman comes in, buys a one-day pass and they get absolutely no information from him," Bostleman said. "It's a breach of security. I mean, what if he had been a sexual offender, and went into the ladies' locker room and did something in there? It would have been a completely different story that way."
In fact, Bostleman believes, if they had collected the man's information, he probably wouldn't have risked the robbery.
"If they would have followed their security measures, and got information, we wouldn't be in this situation right now," Bostleman said.
Planet Fitness corporate representatives said locker room use is always at your own risk, but as far as allowing someone to buy a one-day pass without any identification, they said they do require you to give your name.
The theft suspect is described as a black man, approximately 5'7" to 5'9" and 225 pounds with a beard. If you know anything about the crime, contact Columbia Police.
