Kentucky State Police have arrested a Tompkinsville man on suspicion of assaulting a man whose body was found Thursday morning.

Mark Proffitt was reported missing on July 27. Then, just before 11 a.m. Thursday, his body was found in a field near the intersection of M.O. Lane and Richards Drive in Tompkinsville.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine Proffitt's cause of death.

Later Thursday, KSP said 32-year-old Joseph Tooley was arrested on a charge of fourth-degree assault after an alleged incident involving Proffitt on July 26.

Tooley was booked into the Monroe County Jail, and KSP said additional charges could follow pending results of the autopsy.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact KSP at 1-800-222-5555.
