NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A man in a wheelchair was hit and killed while trying to cross a street.

Roman Augustin, 42, was killed just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning along Murfreesboro Pike.

Augustin tried to cross the road outside of a crosswalk, according to police. The man was hit by a Cadillac Escalade.

The driver of the Cadillac, Shamarco Carter, 35, of Hermitage, said he did not have time to react.  A police officer traveling behind the Cadillac reported that speeding was not a factor.

Medics rushed the man to Vanderbilt, where he later died.

According to Metro Police, evidence at the scene indicated that Augustin may have been drinking.  Carter showed no signs of impairment.

Police say the man was wearing dark clothing and that his wheelchair was also a dark color.

Officers do not plan to file any charges against Carter.
