LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA (WRCB) -

Covenant College announced Wednesday that men's soccer player David Taaffe has passed away due to injuries sustained from a hiking accident in Switzerland.

The rising junior student-athlete was 20 years old.

"As children of God and joint heirs with Christ we cling to the promise of the hope of glory, and we take great comfort in knowing that our brother, David, is with his Lord and Savior already," said Covenant president Dr. J. Derek Halvorson in a statement. "This is a wonderful truth to ponder even as we grieve an extremely painful loss."

Taaffe played in 16 matches, starting one, his freshman season in 2011. In 2012, as a sophomore, Taaffe was an instrumental part of the squad and appeared in 20 contests, starting 13, and registered one goal and one assist. His first collegiate goal came in Covenant's 3-2 win at Sewanee on Oct. 24, 2012.

"As we grieve, we can be assured by our memories of David that he glorified God. What a privilege to know him, and how blessed have we been to share the past two years with him. How precious is our time together! He was the ultimate teammate and our brother in Christ," said head men's soccer coach Nathan Pifer. "We love him, and we miss him."

Taaffe was a Maclellan Scholar and was set to return as a resident assistant on 2nd Central for a second consecutive year.

He came to Covenant by way of Brentwood, Tenn., and Christ Presbyterian Academy, where he earned all-mid-state and all-state honors his junior year.
