CHATTANOOGA (UTC) -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team picked up a big transfer a week before the start of preseason camp.
Head Coach Russ Huesman announced Tuesday the Mocs' have signed Daniel Ring, a 6-3, 275 pound, defensive lineman from Navy who will be eligible to play immediately.
"We are excited to get Daniel in our program," said Huesman. "He is a talented player who has experience playing at a high level. He should be able to step in and help our program immediately."
Ring is a native of Lighthouse Point, Fla., and spent the previous two seasons at the Naval Academy. He played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2012. He started three games at nose tackle, including the final two of the season.
Ring finished the season with 17 tackles, including two for a loss and one sack. He had three solo stops in start in a win against Army.
The Mocs' already loaded defense gets stronger with the addition of Ring. UTC returns 10 starters to a defensive side that was among the top units in the FCS in 2012. The Mocs were 10th in the nation in total defense, allowing just 307.9 yards per game. Chattanooga was also 18th in the country in scoring defense (20.4 ppg) and 12th in the FCS in passing defense (166.0).
UTC opens the season on Thursday, Aug. 29, against UT Martin. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) at Finley Stadium.
