NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The rush hour commute came to a screeching halt Tuesday morning after a Nashville commuter train slammed into a dump truck.

The truck was on the tracks near Old Hickory Boulevard in Hermitage, when it was stuck by a Music City Star train about 7:15 a.m.

There were about 200 people on board the train at the time of the crash, and none was hurt. The driver of the truck was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"Big loud pop and the whole train shook," said train rider Craig Harris. "For something like that to come out of the blue, there was no warning."

Investigators are working to figure out what went wrong and why the truck was on the tracks. The crash occurred on private property, and the truck crosses the tracks several times a day. Plus, there are warning signs posted near the tracks, and the train travels through the area at the same time each day.

Metro police said the crossing guard and flashing lights at the intersection were working at the time of the collision.

"The dump truck started coming across the tracks, and the train was blowing its horn. The truck stopped, and it's unknown at this time if it had a mechanical problem or if the driver stopped," said Metro Police Ofc. Greg Curtis.

The train had a camera recording its journey, and investigators will take a look at what it captured just before the crash.

The train's conductor has worked for the Music City Star since 2006 and has had no prior crashes, and the truck driver has worked for his company for several years with no prior incidents.
