A thief with a long rap sheet is off the streets thanks to the sharp eye of a citizen. Police arrested 35-year-old William Buttrey. He's accused of stealing several items from the Sylvan Park area.
Sheila Defazio had just returned home when she heard a strange sound down the block.
"We actually heard him approach several houses down dragging this trailer," Defazio said.
The whole thing looked suspicious to Defazio Thursday afternoon. So when William Buttrey approached the stop sign, at 49th and Idaho Avenue, she walked up to him.
"I just simply asked him a question," Defazio said. "Are you stealing this?"
His reaction lead Defazio to call police. But she said he wasn't that quick to get away. The truck he was driving died at the intersection.
"He ended up getting the truck started and was able to proceed through the neighborhood pulling the trailer," Defazio said.
But Defazio wasn't going to let Buttrey slowly roll away. Defazio said she and the man who mows her lawn both got into their cars and followed him for several blocks before police finally arrived.
"It was 15-20 minutes out of my afternoon, and it made a huge difference to people he's already wronged and other people he would have done it to in the future," Defazio said.
One of those people Buttrey allegedly wronged is Julius Fisher.
"I couldn't even believe it at first," Fisher said.
Police said he stole a trailer full of music equipment from out front Fisher's home in early May.
"I appreciate the lady who called it in. Man, it's a blessing," Fisher said. "I hope to be able to get some of that stuff back."
Buttrey was allegedly caught Thursday stealing a trailer, four wheeler and truck from two different homes in the Sylvan Park area. He was already on bond for stealing from Fisher along with from homes in the 4200 block of Eatons Creek Road.
Buttrey is behind bars on a $56,000 bond.
