Rescue mission helps homeless beat the summer heat

Posted: Updated:

It was another day of nasty, hot weather in Middle Tennessee, so hopefully you spent most of it inside in the air conditioning.

But some people in our community do not have that luxury, so volunteers are working to ensure their safety in the summer heat.

When the temperature reaches 90 degrees or above, the Nashville Rescue Mission opens up during the day to help the city's homeless cool off.

Workers also go to the various homeless camps and distribute bottled water, typically handing out more than 800 bottles each day.

Another issue the rescue mission deals with at this time of year is a drop in funding. You generally hear about the organization around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but they say this time of year is when they need the support the most.
