Friday's recipe (7/19/13) - Aimee Fortney's infused liquors

Posted: Updated:

Playing around to make your own flavored liquor by infusing them with your favorite fruits (or vanilla beans) can be a lot of fun! I made three different types, just to show you how to get started by infusing tequila, rum and vodka. Play around with your favorite flavors, then really enjoy your margaritas with unique tequila; your mojitos with flavored rum (and whipped cream and cakes!) and martinis with your flavored vodkas!

AIMEE FORTNEY'S INFUSED LIQUORS

These are the ones I made - and below are some ideas to get you rolling! I used 8 ounce sized Mason jars (half pint), but you can use anything you have on hand!

AIMEE FORTNEY'S WATERMELON INFUSED TEQUILA

1/2 cup watermelon chunks
1 cup Familia Camarena Tequila Silver

Place the watermelon chunks (seeds removed) into the jar. Pour tequila over the watermelon, then seal tightly. Shake, then place in your freezer. Twice a day, remove the jar and shake vigorously, then return to the freezer. (If your fruit absorbs too much of the tequila, just add more tequila to the jar). Repeat for at least 5 days before enjoying. Store in your freezer.

AIMEE FORTNEY'S ORANGE INFUSED RUM

1 orange, washed
1 cup Shellback Caribbean Silver Rum

Remove the peel of the orange in long strips. (Make sure to remove any white pith). Place the peels and two orange slices in the bottom of an 8 ounce Mason Jar, then pour the rum over the orange peels and slices, then seal tightly. Shake, then place in your freezer. Twice a day, remove the jar and shake vigorously, then return to the freezer. Repeat for at least 5 days before enjoying. Store in your freezer.

AIMEE FORTNEY'S BERRY INFUSED VODKA

4 strawberries, stems removed and cut in half
6 blackberries
6-8 blueberries
1 cup Blue Ice G Multi-Grain Vodka

Wash and dry all of the fruit. Place in the bottom of an 8-ounce Mason jar, packing it all in, then pour the vodka over the berries. Seal tightly, shake, then place in your freezer. Twice a day, remove the jar and shake vigorously. If the fruit absorbs the vodka, just add more (but be careful not to eat the berries, as they will have soaked in the vodka!). Repeat for at least 5 days before enjoying. Store in your freezer.

Other ideas:

Use vanilla beans. Use lemon zest and lemon slices. Use basil and raspberry, or basil and lemon. Use mint. Try a jalapeño-strawberry blend. Try blackberries with orange zest, or blueberries with lemon zest. Try using pineapple, or pineapple and strawberries together. Grapefruit, orange and lemon together; strawberry and lemon. The options are limitless!
