A mother is accused of leaving her infant in an unattended car parked outside a Wal-Mart.
Keiona Koon, 22, is charged with child neglect after the 6-month-old child was left in the car for about an hour Thursday at the store on Gallatin Pike.
The child wasn't hurt, and police said Koon left the car's air conditioning running while she went into the store.
When police arrived at the scene, the baby was asleep in a child safety seat.
But experts say it's never safe to leave your child alone in the car, no matter the temperature.
"It's important for families to recognize - even just a quick trip into the store, you're going in to grab milk or something on the way home - you never really know how long that trip is going to take you," said Sarah Haverstick, Safe Children program manager at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.
Tennessee has an unattended child law that allows police to charge caretakers for leaving children alone in a car not matter what time of year or the temperature outside.
"It's the sun coming into the vehicle that dramatically increases the temperature. So even on a 70-degree day, we still see fatalities across the country," Haverstick said.
