Portland police say a liquor store clerk stole thousands of dollars from the business over the past two years.

Brandy Popejoy, 23, of Hendersonville, admitted to the scheme in which she would ring up customers, and before processing the payment would back out of the transaction on the register and pocket the money instead.

Police said the owner at Portland Wine and Spirits on West Knight Street started to notice things were not adding up, so she spoke with employees and told them she was contacting police.

Popejoy first turned over a written, notarized statement admitting to stealing $30,000.

When the owner realized she was missing more money than that, she confronted Popejoy who offered another notarized statement, this time admitting to stealing $75,000.

"She showed me the two confessions that she had from her employee. I've never seen this before," said Portland Police Detective Joey Rush.

She is charged with theft over $60,000, and is set to appear in court Aug. 14.
