Mocs release '13-14 men's basketball schedule

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball program will play at UCLA, Nevada, Georgia and the University of Alabama-Birmingham during Will Wade's first season as head coach.

The Mocs released their upcoming schedule Monday afternoon. It's a slate that includes 14 home dates at the newly-refurbished McKenzie Arena.

"It's nice to have it done and give our fans something to look forward to," Wade said in a release. "It was one of our first tasks when we got here, and I am really pleased at what we were able to accomplish. It sets up well for our first season and for future years.

UTC will play UCLA and Nevada as part of the eight-team Las Vegas Invitational, but the road trips to Georgia and UAB are a part of scheduling agreements that will bring the larger-conference foes to The Roundhouse in the future.

"Moving forward, we will be able to better apply our scheduling philosophy starting in 2014-15," Wade said. "We're excited with the series with Georgia and UAB and look forward to those schools coming back to Chattanooga in 2014-15."

The biggest name on this year's home slate is a potential matchup with Middle Tennessee State during the annual Dr. Pepper Classic. The Blue Raiders, who earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament last season, will join Maine and Grand Canyon in the four-team event December 28-29.

Three of the first four games will be at McKenzie Arena, including the season-opener against Covenant College. The Mocs will host the Scots at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, November 8, as part of a season-opening doubleheader with the UTC women. The Lady Mocs will debut new head coach Jim Foster at 8:30 p.m. ET against SEC-foe Alabama.

UTC will then travel to Radford before home dates with Montreat and Kennessaw State.

The Southern Conference schedule begins January 4 at Furman. The Mocs will also play at The Citadel before returning for their SoCon home-opener against Samford on January 9.

The 11-team league will not play in divisions for the first time since 1994, forcing an unbalanced 16-game schedule. Chattanooga will play two games with Furman, Samford, Wofford, Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina, but just one game with The Citadel, Elon, Davidson and Georgia Southern.
