St. Thomas Health renaming Baptist, other hospitals

Posted: Updated:

The bold letters of Baptist Hospital have dominated the midtown Nashville skyline for years, but the signs around the campus showed a new name Thursday.

Saint Thomas Health announced it is renaming its family of five hospitals in Middle Tennessee, saying it will "better reflect the organization's common mission."

"We want people to understand the size and the scope of our system," said Dr. Michael Schatzlein, president and CEO of Saint Thomas Health.

St. Thomas has owned Baptist since 2002 but said most people don't know the systems are affiliated.

Effective immediately, the hospitals will now be known as:

  • Saint Thomas West Hospital (formerly Saint Thomas Hospital)
  • Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital (formerly Baptist Hospital)
  • Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital (formerly Middle Tennessee Medical Center)
  • Saint Thomas Hickman Hospital (formerly Hickman Community Hospital)
  • Saint Thomas Hospital for Spinal Surgery (formerly The Hospital for Spinal Surgery)

Plus, the Tennessee Titans' practice facility near Metrocenter also has a new name: St. Thomas Sports Park.

"The new names unite us in a common goal and a common vision improving the lives of the communities we serve," Schatzlein said.

Crews are already replacing the signs on the side of each hospital.

Schatzlein said the rebranding will make it clear to the public that each of those health care facilities is owned by St. Thomas Health.

The name change comes at a time when hospital systems are doing more to care for entire populations under the Affordable Care Act.

Hospitals' missions won't change, but they understand there's emotion that goes with changing a name, so they plan to pay tribute to that by naming a street Baptist Way and even putting the signs up for grabs.

"We're going to try to auction those off to support the NICU, so if anyone wants a 12-foot 'B' to put in their front yard let us know," Schatzelin said.
