UPDATE: South Pittsburg bears the brunt of storms; cleanup begins

SOUTH PITTSBURG, TN (WRCB) -

UPDATE: Crews are out with bulldozers on Cedar Avenue, clearing debris from the streets and drains.

Third Street has also been affected, with rocks and other debris that resulted from rockslide of nearby South Pittsburg Mountain.

The temporary Red Cross shelter on 10th Street is now closed. Seniors evacuated from the Senior Center have been re-located to several nearby hotels.

Two people were taken to hospitals for inuiries sustained last night: one for hypothermia, the other for lacerations. Both have been releaed.

Major flooding in South Pittsburg has shut down parts of the town, flooded businesses and homes and forced some evacuations.

South Pittsburg Mayor Jane Dawkins told Channel 3 early Thursday morning there are no injuries as of yet but that emergency crews performed multiple rescues and evacuations.

Dawkins said the town received four inches of rain in less than two hours Wednesday night. The National Weather Service reports there was three feet of water running down several streets and flowing through homes at one point.

Dawkins said the entire first floor of a senior apartment complex was evacuated but that the residents are all safe.

Many areas of South Pittsburg are without power and several fallen trees are blocking area roadways.

"A lot of people had been to church tonight and came out to a heavy rain, storm situation," Dawkins said. "It just came quickly and the ground couldn't absorb it fast enough plus the rain ran off from the mountain. We're located between a mountain and a river and that's the path that the water has taken."

Crews set up a command post at South Pittsburg High School.

Officials will begin assessing the damage later Thursday morning. Channel-3 will have a crew in South Pittsburg today with continuous updates online.
