Bulger's Beat: Tullahoma artist finds influence in recyclables

Posted: Updated:

Just about everything in one Coffee County art shop is different, including the owner. Becky Shelton takes broken things that have no future and makes them relevant again.

It's kind of what she's done with her own life, so that's why the Tullahoma woman calls herself the Dislocated Artist.

"That's how I got the word 'dislocated,' because the unemployment office said, 'Don't be sad, your job dislocated from you,'" Shelton said.

Laid off from work and feeling down in the dump, Shelton looked to the dump to find her way out.

"One day I might be making pieces out of trash, then, one day I might sit down and paint a cow, because cows make me happy," she said.

In her new, liberated life with art, at her shop, anything goes.

"I don't throw anything away, if you noticed," she said. "I'll make something pretty out of it."

Shelton's style is kid-friendly, and she says in painting, there are no rules and no mistakes.

"They can get paint on towels while painting and it doesn't bother anybody. That, right there, opens their eyes, and they go, 'Woo,'" Shelton said.

There are laughs all around at her shop behind the historic Coke Cola building, where you might see a recycled toaster-lamp-colander salt and pepper shaker from the lady, once laid off, who's recycled herself.

"I'm a flower smeller, risk taker, rule bender, cow watcher," Shelton said. "I love it, I love it."

Shelton's art is filled with a certain free spirit, but her style and lessons also have a very real artistic side.

Picasso, Monet and Jackson Pollock are all serious influences on her work.
