NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

What started with a quick trip to Haiti in 1999 has turned into a massive food program that is changing lives.

Trinity Hope, a Middle Tennessee-based group, is feeding thousands of students every day in the Caribbean nation.

Dozens of groups reached out to the country after the massive earthquake struck in 2010, but a local group had already been assisting the impoverished nation.

"I was on a mission trip to Haiti, but when we got there, we went to one of the schools and saw how hungry the children were. We knew we needed to feed those children," said John Hall of Trinity Hope.

Hall came home and started raising money to feed as many children as possible. In the group's first year, they provided meals to 42 children a day.

"God called us to start and has never told us to stop," said Hall.

Fourteen years later, Trinity Hope is feeding 18,000 children and teachers each day at schools across the country.

All of the money raised in the U.S. by the organization is sent to the program's coordinators in Haiti.

Using the money, they buy supplies locally so shipments of food are never slowed or held up at ports of entry.

Those local supplies are then turned into meals on site every day; an overwhelming act of generosity that has inspired many students to serve.

"We have a really good track record of kids who have received meals in past going on and paying it forward in their own country," said Hall.

Because they're made locally, each meal cost about 27 cents. The group said 96 percent of every dollar they raise goes directly to provide food to Haitians.
