Bulger's Beat: Summer program teaches songwriting, music

Posted: Updated:

Teenagers are finding the beat this summer at Pearl-Cohn High School in Nashville, where music, songwriting and poetry are all part of a unique summer camp experience.

The summer camp options these days cover so much more than they used to, and the camp at Pearl-Cohn is a prime example. Instead of heading home with a trophy, these campers are more likely to go home with a new song.

Sarah Reid wanted her summer to be about music, so she's singing and putting words on paper for new songs.

"This music is just everything to me," she said.

Nashville record producers guide the campers on their artistic journeys. For some it's learning to sing, while for others it's just figuring out the groove.

Shamari Suttle, 18, is learning how a song is born: the words, the engineers, the technology. It really does take a village to raise a song.

"I started working with this group, and I saw it takes all this to make a masterpiece," she said.

The masterpiece at Pearl-Cohn is young people choosing to be in the library during summer vacation.

Going home with a song or a poem you created doesn't just feel cool, it is the ultimate in boosting confidence and self-esteem. And there isn't a teenager out there who can't use a bigger dose of that.
