NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro Council on Tuesday unanimously passed a new facial recognition program on a first reading.

If approved, Metro police would be able to submit pictures to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, similar to fingerprints, to check against a database of photos.

The system can only be used based on an investigative lead.

The FBI hopes to have it fully operational by next summer.
