Cookeville man dies after altercation with police

COOKEVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a Putnam County man who was involved in an altercation with police Monday.

Deputies with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call of an individual having a medical condition in the 1900 block of Cane Creek Road in Cookeville.

The man, identified as James McCollum, 41, was noncompliant and reportedly hallucinating from drug induced withdrawals, said the TBI.

Police said the resident had an altercation with deputies and was handcuffed but later died.

Three deputies had to be taken to the hospital, were treated for injuries and released.

The District Attorney General's Office and Cookeville Police Department are also helping with the investigation.
