MTSU Blue Raiders officially join Conference USA

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Monday was moving day at Middle Tennessee State University as the athletics program at the state's largest undergraduate university changed its affiliation to Conference USA.

MTSU became one of eight new members in the 16-team league, so to celebrate, the Blue Raiders threw a series of parties across Murfreesboro.

MTSU is going to receive about $1.2 million per year as a member of Conference USA, which is up from $30,000 to $40,000 annually from the Sun Belt Conference.

And head football coach Rick Stockstill is looking forward to having his team play on television much more often.

"That's one of the benefits of being in Conference USA, is their TV packages are really outstanding. It's going to be a great opportunity for our players, and our fans who can't go to the games will be able to watch," he said.

Western Kentucky University will officially join Conference USA on July 1, 2014.
